Abstract:
This study addresses the methode of teaching and learning of Arabic language at Malaysian Universities. The traditional techniques are still dominant at the religious secondary schools and they are concerned with the dictating of Arabic grammatical rules, without focusing on speaking and writing, resulting in the complication of Arabic learning. Lately, there seems to be a trend of analysis of the factors influencing Arabic teaching and learning process. Thus, this study intends to identify interest factor, methods of teaching Arabic, the way of using textbook, Arabic learning and teaching activities, and the surrounding presence of Arabic. This study adopts descriptive method in collecting data from various sources, researches, educational approaches and theories on Arabic teaching and learning. As the most important conclusion, this study suggests that the significant factors in shaping Arabic teaching and learning techniques are associated with five factors of which are interest, Arabic teaching approaches, the use of textbook, Arabic teaching and learning activities, surrounding presence of Arabic, and the teachers’ roles in grammar classroom. Likewise, the strongest factor in helping the students master Arabic is teachers’ roles in grammar classroom whereas the weakest factor is Arabic teaching and learning activities needing development and enhancement. Also, this study indicates that the strongest factor in the elevation of the teachers in teaching Arabic is their interest whereas the weakest factor is Arabic teaching and learning activities. To sum up, this study reaches the clear picture of five significant factors in accomplishing Arabic teaching and learning techniques in order to suit teaching activity, the need of changing and reforming the programmes and syllabi, and the creation of a suitable environment at the religious secondary schools to make the students more interested in learning Arabic. These conclusions may help the Ministry of Education of Malaysia in overcoming Arabic teaching and learning problem, in organising and programming Arabic activities for the students and teachers, and in motivating, financing and providing programs related to Arabic teaching and learning activities.
